So last night I was putting one of the twins to sleep and somewhat (way too often!) we need to kind of pat their tushies to help them fall asleep. I’ve had a bit of a cold and I was feeling already tired by bedtime. I decided to lean over the crib, kind of leaning my boobs over the railing to rest my arm while I patted the baby. Upon leaving the room, I noticed my left boob was sticking straight up under my shirt!
Now realize, that after a mastectomy, there is no sensation to the nipple area so I had no idea this happened! I kind of panicked and rubbed it down and luckily it flipped back into the right position. I was so relieved! No pain or discomfort! Now, on the right boob, it felt a little funny but since that’s my radiated side, I ignored it. This morning it still felt a little funny so when I lifted my shirt up I saw why! My boob looked like a pancake instead of a dome! That implant flipped too! I figured it can’t be that hard to flip back. I did some quick research to make sure I could do it myself! It was sooo easy (thankfully!) Here’s what I did:
- I bent over letting the boobs hang low towards the floor
2. I put one hand under the boob kind of shoving fingers underneath the implant
3. Took my right hand on top sort of gently pushing/massaging the implant in the opposite direction of my left hand and Boom! It flipped!
Now, I would always recommend to call your plastic surgeon before attempting to flip them yourself! Especially if: you don’t know how to do this, you feel uncomfortable doing this, or if you have any risk of a rupture, history or risk of complications, or any open wounds! I also found out that some implants cannot flip back and need to be done so surgically.
Now why do they flip? Who knows. Sometimes the pocket is now bigger than the implant, sometimes it’s the type of implant, and the list goes on. I’m hoping this is not a frequent situation and don’t have to do this frequently moving forward!
