Taste Safe Chia Slime

Make Safe and Fun Chia Seed Slime!

If this picture scares you, this activity is NOT for you!! haha C’mon it’s so fun! Kids LOVE getting messy. You see my daughter here playing with the cornstarch as I mixed! It’s so soft, she can’t help herself! Best of all, her face wiped up easily with a baby wipe and clothes washed easily in the washer!

Toddlers absolutely LOVE sensory play! Here is a somewhat quick and easy slime recipe that they can lick, tatste, eat, and endlessly play with!

Make it your own! Add food coloring, sprinkles, edible glitter, or even food flavoring (think cinnamon, mint, vanilla, etc.) to add even more sensory experiences!

Recipe:

1/4 cup of chia seeds

1 3/4 cup of water

2-4 cups of corn starch

Any extra additives 🙂

Making the slime:

Mix the water and chia seeds in a bowl ahead of time (at least 1 hour).  You can cover the bowl with seran wrap and leave it on the counter or stick it in the fridge. This alone will make a goopy gel that’s still fun to play with but VERY messy! You can even do this the night before so it’s ready in the morning.

Once the chia seeds have absorb their water capacity, it’s time to add the cornstarch. Add a little bit of a time and mix until it becomes slime consistency (right after it’s done becoming oobleck!). This may become difficult and you may have to continue mixing by hand. This part you can definitely include the kids. It could be messy but as the cornstarch gets mixed with the water, they will mostly have dried powder residue on their hands!

Tips:

  1. I would suggest laying down towels you don’t care about on the floor
  2. Provide each child with a bowl of the slime and a mixing spoon to avoid any fights
  3.  Provide them with a safe play space like a baking sheet that’s easy to clean up!
  4. I prefer my toddlers only wearing diapers for this to avoid clothes getting dirty

PRO TIP: If you are NOT about messes, I suggest you do this in your shower or bathtub for an even easier clean up!
