My Breast Cancer Story

My Breast Cancer Story

Sometime around the week of January 30, 2023 I felt a small bump on top of my right breast. I was about 32 weeks pregnant with my identical twin girls! I thought this was odd since, well, I knew what my body felt like pretty well! I told my husband about this since it gave me “spidey senses”. He simply told me, weird stuff happens when you’re pregnant, just tell your OB the next time you see her.

February 8, 2023 was a day like any other. I had my usual appointment with my OB. Had my appoitment like normal. Fetal heart beats where excellent and I was measuring like 60 weeks (haha just kidding!). Right before I took my second leg off the stirrups I remembered about the bump and made sure I told her. She quickly touched my chest and said, “weird things happen when you’re pregnant, lets just get it checked out”.

I was lucky enough to get an appointment for a breast ultrasound the very next day.

As soon as the ultrasound was over, the tech immediately called over the radiologist who came in like a storm. I hadn’t even gotten dressed yet! Boobs out in the open she said, “let’s go right now! You need to schedule a biopsy ASAP!”. Now, this type of reaction would scare most people, but I felt 100% confidence that I was fine because my husband had said so! Back home, I did what any normal person would do, GOOGLE!!! So I looked up what an adenoma looked like on ultrasound so I knew what I would see in a few days.

The day of my ultrasound came and I was still oblivious. My husband was out of town, skiing with his brother. I went in there like the brave woman I am, thinking “I’ll be in and out in no time!” But what I saw on that screen was no perfectly round, oval shaped tumor. It looked like the image of my kids throwing slime against the wall. It was totally irregular and ugly. That’s when it hit me, “I don’t think this normal. I think this is really bad”.

The days pending for the biospy where long. My husband had returned from his trip by then and the boob pain from the biospy was gone. I had to take my youngest to get some blood work before taking her to daycare. We were running about the supermarket next door while they called her name when I got the call. It was my husband telling me my diagnosis. I start to hear his voice say “you have in-%*]* Du-^]>^ ^%*-oma. I’m so sorry”. All while I’m chasing my 3 year old in my then 33 week pregnant body. I said,  “sorry I can’t talk right now. I’ll call you later after I’m done with my morning.” I finish what I had to do with my little girl and went to drive her back to daycare. That’s when I saw my mother driving right next to me, but going the wrong way to work. She was going to be late to work! I called my sister to let her know of this odd finding and she said, “we are all heading to your house right now.” I shook my head at the ridiculousness, like what? Why? So what I have a little thing. What’s the big deal. She said, Yvonne, you have cancer. This is serious!”
